Canadian Education Sector Calls for Government Collaboration Amid Policy Challenges

According to a survey conducted by IDP Education, sector executives are calling for greater cooperation to support students and maintain Canada’s appeal as a study destination, indicating that recent government initiatives are having an impact on Canadian foreign programs.

Canadian international educators are becoming increasingly concerned about government policies that impact international students, according to a recent survey conducted by IDP Education in partnership with important Canadian sector organizations. The survey shows widespread dissatisfaction, with nearly 90% of respondents citing negative impacts on their programs. Results show that the dissatisfaction was especially with regard to the new cap on study permits and restrictions on post-graduation employment options. Although 67% of respondents concur that some intervention was required to control the sharp increase in student enrolment, 68% disagree with the particular policies, pointing to inadequate government involvement with education stakeholders in the policy-making process.

Leaders in the field, such as Ajay Patel of Vancouver Community College and Simon Emmett of IDP Education, stress the necessity of transparent, cooperative initiatives to preserve Canada’s standing as a top international student destination. In an effort to mitigate any potential long-term harm and encourage positive student experiences, IDP has started a nationwide video campaign called “There’s a future in Canada for you.” In light of the changing policy environment, the campaign, which features international students and alumni, seeks to change public perception and draw attention to Canada’s study opportunities.
