New Regulations on International Student Program Take Effect

International students in Canada face new regulatory changes. The reforms, announced by Immigration Minister Marc Miller, took effect today.

These updated regulations bring noticeable alterations to work permissions. With this change, eligible students can now work up to 24 hours weekly during academic terms.

A key change affects institution transfers. Overseas students must now secure new study permit approval before switching schools.

The government has also strengthened oversight of educational institutions. Designated learning institutions (DLIs) face stricter reporting requirements.

These institutions must now maintain proper compliance reporting. Failure to submit reports or verify acceptance letters carries consequences. DLIs could face suspensions lasting up to one year.

The changes aim to protect program integrity. Since 2015, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has worked with DLIs to improve student monitoring.

“By fixing the off-campus work limit to 24 hours per week, we’re striking the right balance between providing work opportunities and helping students stay focused on their education. We also expect institutions to support our efforts to preserve the integrity of the International Student Program. International students should have a positive, successful experience in Canada, and the important changes made today will help with that.” noted Minister Miller.

Students and institutions must adapt to these new requirements. The changes affect both current and future international students in Canada.

In other news, Canada has recently has ended fast-track study permit processing for overseas students.
