Thompson Rivers University Launches Major Clean Energy Initiative

Solar panel installation on roof

Thompson Rivers University (TRU) has received BC Hydro’s approval to install over 1,000 solar panels across its campus in a five-year project, marking one of the first such initiatives among B.C. universities.

The TRU Solarization photovoltaic (PV) Project will begin with Phase One, installing 540 solar PV panels on three Kamloops campus buildings: the Campus Activity Centre, Arts and Education building, and Industrial Training and Technology Centre.

This clean energy initiative will support TRU’s Low-Carbon District Energy System, contributing to the university’s ambitious goal of achieving zero carbon by 2030.

The project is being supported through BC Hydro’s load displacement program, which provides funding for clean energy generation projects. Since Kamloops is so sunny, using solar energy to generate power makes sense.

Upon completion, the solar panel system will generate approximately one megawatt of power – equivalent to powering 200 homes. The first phase will deliver 40 percent of this target by generating 353kw of power.

Construction is set to commence this fall, with completion scheduled for March 2025.
